If you want to fly within the United States without carrying your passport, you will soon need to have a Real ID. Starting next May, all U.S. travelers will be required to have this secure document when traveling domestically. Real ID is an enhanced form of identification that will be mandatory for entering certain federal facilities, boarding commercial aircraft, and visiting nuclear power plants from May 7, 2025, onwards. The REAL ID Act, established in 2005, sets minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses to reduce identity fraud. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents will only accept cards that meet these new standards, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Who Needs a Real ID and How to Obtain One
Any traveler aged 18 or older who plans to travel domestically or visit specific federal facilities must possess a Real ID or an acceptable alternative like a passport. After May 7, 2025, TSA will only recognize Real ID cards with a compliant star stamp. Some states, such as Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont, issue enhanced driver licenses (EDLs) that also adhere to the Real ID standard.
All Real IDs are visibly marked with an asterisk in the upper right corner.
