Austin Tex-Mex Staple Chuy’s Set to Change Hands

The beloved Tex-Mex institution, Chuy’s, based in Austin, is about to embark on a new chapter with a change in ownership. Darden Dinings, Inc. recently announced their plans to acquire Chuy’s Holdings, Inc. in a cash deal worth $605 million, marking a significant milestone for the iconic restaurant chain.

Excitement and Anticipation Surrounding the Acquisition

With this acquisition, Darden Dinings, Inc. will add Chuy’s to its impressive portfolio of restaurants, which includes popular names like Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, and Bahama Breeze. The CEO, President, and Chairman of Chuy’s, Steven Hislop, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting the shared values and strong team culture between the two companies.

Transitioning from independent ownership to being a part of a larger restaurant group opens up new possibilities for Chuy’s and its future growth. Darden’s extensive network of over 1,900 restaurants nationwide, including 216 locations in Texas, will provide Chuy’s with ample resources and support to continue serving its loyal customers.

A Deeply Rooted History in Austin’s Culinary Scene

Since its inception in 1982 on Barton Springs Road, Chuy’s has been a cornerstone of Austin’s Tex-Mex dining scene. With a menu that boasts a variety of tacos, burritos, and other Tex-Mex delights, Chuy’s has been delighting customers for over 40 years.

As of July, Chuy’s operates 101 stores in 15 states across the U.S., with plans for further expansion, including a new location in Hutto set to open in 2025. The company’s robust performance, with total revenue exceeding $450 million in the past year, reflects its enduring popularity and success.

Looking to the Future

As Chuy’s transitions to new ownership under Darden Dinings, Inc., fans can expect the same exceptional quality and service that they have come to love over the years. The deal is expected to close during Darden’s fiscal second quarter, setting the stage for a promising future for the beloved Tex-Mex chain.

Chuy’s joins a growing list of Austin businesses that have been acquired by larger companies, showcasing the city’s vibrant and dynamic culinary landscape. With this new chapter on the horizon, Chuy’s remains committed to delighting customers with its delicious Tex-Mex fare for years to come.
