Keyphrase: Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to Boar’s Head Deli Slices
Boar’s Head Provisions is issuing a recall for all liverwurst products due to potential contamination with listeria, according to the U.S. Food and Safety Inspection Service. This announcement comes as health officials investigate a listeria outbreak that has affected 34 individuals and resulted in two deaths across multiple states.
Recall and Safety Warning
Boar’s Head has also identified potential listeria contamination in some of its deli meat products and is recalling over 103 tons of meat. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them, and retailers are urged to remove them from store shelves. In response to the outbreak, some grocery chains have temporarily closed their delis.
Product Details and Potential Contamination
The recalled liver sausage products were manufactured between June 11 and June 17 and have a shelf life of 44 days. These products were sold at retail delis nationwide and include plastic-wrapped 3.5-pound loaves and sliced variations labeled as “Boar’s Head Strasbourg Brand Liverwurst.” Additional products removed from stores due to potential listeria contamination include Virginia ham, old-fashioned ham, Italian Carabi Ham, and others.
Health Risks and Prevention
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for listeriosis, can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe infections can occur in pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise reheating deli meats to a high temperature before consumption to eliminate any bacteria present.
