Fort Bend County’s Efforts to Combat Mosquito Infestation
Fort Bend County in Texas is taking proactive measures to control the mosquito population in areas with high mosquito activity. As mosquito season begins, officials are using a combination of ground-based spray trucks and mosquito-killing aircraft to tackle the issue.
Utilizing Aerial Application for Mosquito Control
The Fort Bend Health and Human Services Department announced that they will be conducting aerial spraying of the mosquito-killing insecticide DIROM in several areas including Needville, Fairchild, Siena, Fresno, Pearland, and Orchard. This aerial management approach is aimed at rapidly reducing adult mosquito populations in the county.
Effects of Recent Heavy Rainfall on Mosquito Activity
Recent stormy weather and heavy rainfall, especially after Hurricane Beryl, have led to a significant increase in mosquito populations in Fort Bend County. The flooding of areas where mosquito eggs were present has resulted in a higher emergence of mosquitoes this year. This heightened activity has prompted local officials to take swift action to address the issue.
Despite the increase in mosquito activity, only 13 mosquitoes in Fort Bend County have tested positive for West Nile virus. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension entomologist Dr. Sonja Swiger highlighted that out of the 88 different species of mosquitoes in Texas, only one carries the West Nile virus.
Dr. Swiger also provided advice on how to minimize exposure to virus-carrying mosquitoes. She noted that the mosquito carrying the West Nile virus is active at night, particularly between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Individuals are advised to take precautions during these times to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
The mosquito control efforts in Fort Bend County aim to create a safer outdoor environment for residents by effectively managing the mosquito population.
