The Potential Health Risks of High Levels of Vitamin D in Infant Formula
Recall of Infant Formula
Perrigo is recalling 16,500 cans of infant formula sold at HEB grocery stores and CVS Health stores in 12 states due to high levels of vitamin D. The company issued a notice stating that the voluntary recall includes cans labeled HEB Baby Infant Premium Infant Formula (Contains Iron) and CVS Health Infant Premium Infant Formula (Contains Iron). The affected products were shipped to HEB grocery stores in Texas and CVS stores in California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
Health Concerns
Routine tests revealed that the vitamin D levels in the recalled infant formula batch were higher than the maximum allowed. While for most infants, short-term consumption may not cause adverse health effects, vulnerable infants with compromised kidney function may experience health problems.
