BMW Announces Recall of 720,796 Vehicles in North America

BMW has announced a recall of over 720,000 vehicles in North America due to a potential fire hazard caused by the electric water pumps in these vehicles. The issue stems from incorrectly installed water pumps, which could short-circuit and lead to a fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has highlighted that improperly sealed electrical connectors on the water pump may be exposed to water, causing a short circuit. Specifically, blow-by fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake hose and eventually drip onto the plug connector, resulting in a power shortage.

Models Affected by the Recall

The recall pertains to several BMW models, including the 228I, Chapter 228, 328I, 328XI, 428I, 428XI, 528I, X1, X3, X4, X5, and Z4, spanning from 2012 to 2018. Owners of these vehicles will have the water pump and plug replaced, and a guard installed free of charge by BMW dealers. Notification letters will be sent out to affected vehicle owners on October 4th. If you own one of the mentioned models, it’s crucial to act promptly to ensure your safety on the road.

Response and Safety Measures

BMW has taken proactive steps to address the issue, with the recall number “24V-608” assigned to this particular campaign. The company has received 18 customer complaints related to the faulty pumps, emphasizing the importance of addressing the issue promptly. Despite the reported complaints, BMW has reassured that no accidents or injuries have been linked to the recall. Vehicle owners are encouraged to contact the NHTSA safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for further assistance or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information.

Recall History of BMW

This is the third recall BMW has initiated since July, signifying the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its customers. Previous recalls have addressed issues like faulty bolts causing cargo rail detachment and airbag inflators manufactured by Takata potentially causing harm to occupants. BMW’s proactive approach to recalls underscores the brand’s dedication to prioritizing customer safety and maintaining the quality of its vehicles on the road. Keeping up with recall information and promptly addressing any concerns is essential for all vehicle owners to drive safely and with peace of mind.

By addressing vehicle safety concerns promptly and transparently, BMW continues to uphold its reputation as a responsible and customer-centric automaker, ensuring the well-being of drivers and passengers alike.
