Key Democratic Figures Vying for Sheila Jackson Lee’s Congressional Seat
Next week, Harris County’s 88 Democratic precinct chairs will select the individual who could succeed the late U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in Congress. The selection will be crucial, as the chosen candidate is expected to run against Republican Lana Centonze on Nov. 5. Given the district’s strong Democratic leaning, the Democratic nominee is likely to emerge victorious.
The Contenders
Among the contenders for the Democratic nomination are former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, state Rep. Jarvis Johnson, state Rep. Cristina Morales, and Houston City Council member Letitia Plummer. Each candidate brings a unique set of experiences and policy priorities to the table.
Candidate Profiles
Sylvester Turner, the most experienced candidate, has a longstanding relationship with Sheila Jackson Lee and has garnered support from her family. Amanda Edwards, despite a previous unsuccessful bid, continues to focus on issues like small business support and healthcare. Jarvis Johnson emphasizes coordination among elected officials and funding for local priorities. Letitia Plummer stresses transportation, affordable housing, and public health initiatives. Cristina Morales advocates for voting rights and education reform.
