Daughter of Sheila Jackson Lee Runs in Special Election to Finish Mother’s Term
Erica Lee Carter, the daughter of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, has announced her candidacy in the special election for the 18th Congressional District in Houston. Carter’s decision to run comes after the passing of her mother, who served the district for over 30 years and passed away in July after battling pancreatic cancer.
Continuing a Legacy of Public Service
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Carter expressed her gratitude to the community for their support during this challenging time for her family. She acknowledged the encouragement she received from many to step up and complete her mother’s term, and after careful consideration, she decided to answer the call.
With the special election scheduled for November 5, Carter will be vying to finish out her mother’s unexpired term, which ends in January. Additionally, she will be contending with other candidates for the Democratic Party nomination in the 18th District.
Unity and Support in the Campaign
Upon announcing her candidacy, Carter received immediate support from Bishop James Dixon, who had previously considered running in the special election. Dixon praised Carter’s decision to seek election to serve out her mother’s term, emphasizing her strength and determination to carry on her mother’s legacy.
As the campaign progresses, Carter and her supporters are focused on working together to honor the memory and contributions of the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee, who was affectionately known as “Congresswoman” by her constituents.
Despite the challenges ahead, Carter’s commitment to public service and her mother’s legacy shines through, as she seeks to continue the work begun by Sheila Jackson Lee and make a positive impact on the community she cares deeply about.
