Fighting Food Insecurity in Southeast Texas
Food insecurity is a pressing issue affecting one in five children in Southeast Texas. It refers to the lack of consistent access to nutritious food, forcing families to make difficult decisions to make ends meet. Many children rely on school meals for their daily nutrition, but gaps exist during weekends and holidays when access to food becomes limited. The Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies Program aims to address this gap by providing weekend meals to children in need.
Supporting the Community Through Generosity
Food insecurity often leads to families having to prioritize between purchasing groceries and meeting other essential needs. With rising inflation, the cost of food items like meat, fresh produce, and dairy products continues to increase, putting additional strain on households. Organizations like KHOU 11, American Furniture Warehouse, Marco’s Pizza, Mrs. Baird’s, Trust, and Houston Food Bank are working together to raise $50,000 to provide weekend meals to over 15,000 students in the Houston area.
Making a Difference Through Donations
From now until August 30, you can contribute to this cause by making a donation online. Every donation counts, and KHOU 11 is matching all donations up to $11,000 to maximize the impact of your generosity. Your support will help provide essential meals to children facing food insecurity in our community.
