The Houston Public Library’s Journey to Citizenship Program: Helping You Become a U.S. Citizen
The Houston Public Library has relaunched its Journey to Citizenship program with the aim of assisting individuals in their quest to become U.S. citizens. The program, which spans seven weeks, offers 90-minute lessons designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to pass the vocabulary, reading, and writing sections of the citizenship test. Additionally, guidance on the interview process and a review of the 100 citizenship questions on the exam are provided.
Expanding Access and Resources for Citizenship
Thanks to a generous $200,000 grant from the Houston Endowment Fund, the Houston Public Library is able to expand and enhance its Journey to Citizenship program. The grant will facilitate the hiring of four part-time instructors, allowing for the program to be offered at additional locations. Donnie Byrd, manager of adult and multicultural programs at the Houston Public Library, anticipates the recruitment of instructors in the early to mid-fall period.
Supplementary Support and Upcoming Civics Courses
In addition to the Journey to Citizenship program, the Houston Public Library also provides English language classes. Library cardholders have access to citizenship packets containing DVDs, flashcards, and study guides, which can be borrowed for up to three weeks at a time to supplement their learning.
