The city of Houston is coming together to pay tribute to the late U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on July 19 after battling pancreatic cancer. From Monday through Thursday, the community will have the opportunity to honor her memory and celebrate her legacy.
Monday, July 29: A Day of Reflection
On Monday, July 29, a funeral service for Congresswoman Jackson Lee will take place at City Hall from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Members of the public are invited to pay their respects, sign letters of condolence, and witness a special joint honor guard representing the Houston Police Department and the Houston Fire Department. The day will begin with a heartfelt event led by Houston Mayor Whitmire, religious leaders, and the congresswoman’s family at 9:15 a.m.
Tuesday, July 30: A Time for Remembrance
The following day, on Tuesday, July 30, a viewing and memorial will be held at God’s Grace Community Church from 4 to 8 p.m. It will be a time for friends, family, and constituents to come together and remember the life and contributions of Congresswoman Jackson Lee.
Wednesday, July 31: Community Farewell
Wednesday, July 31, will be dedicated to a viewing at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a community farewell and thank you service from 3 to 8 p.m. This will be an opportunity for the community to express their gratitude for the congresswoman’s service and dedication to the people of Houston.
Thursday, August 1: Celebrating a Life Well Lived
The final day of remembrance, Thursday, August 1, will feature a celebration of life service at Fallbrook Church at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required for this event, where friends, colleagues, and community members will gather to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
