Family Seeks Help After 9-Year-Old Boy Loses Prosthetic Leg in Galveston
When Jace saw the water, he couldn’t contain his excitement and jumped right in, losing his prosthetic leg in the process.
Ken Swindell took his family on an impromptu trip to Galveston, Texas last Sunday. His 9-year-old son, Jess, was thrilled when he saw the water and decided to run in without waiting for his prosthetic leg to be removed. In the excitement of jumping on the waves, Jess lost his leg in the water.
Just days before Jess was supposed to return to school, the family faced a costly decision. Ken spent most of the day searching for the prosthetic leg in the water but had no luck. Despite volunteers helping with metal detectors, the leg remained missing. Replacement parts were estimated to cost around $7,000.
“He needs a leg to go to school and travel. We do have people donating a wheelchair to us to help him get around temporarily,” Ken said. The family is asking anyone who finds the leg to turn it over to the Galveston Beach Patrol, which has their address and will then return it to them.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
As a response to their situation, the family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for a new prosthetic leg for Jace. The community has shown an outpouring of support, with many offering help and donations to assist the family in purchasing the necessary equipment.
